Spoken in Tongues is an emo-punk band founded by former Blenderhead frontman Billy Power. The project began in New Jersey in 2018 as a solo recording endeavor, drawing inspiration from the golden era of emo—Jimmy Eat World, Saves the Day, and The Promise Ring—alongside the melodic punk of The Menzingers, Samiam, and Iron Chic.
Power wrote, performed, recorded, and mixed the project’s debut album, The Nail That Sticks Up Will Be Hammered Down, released in 2019 with the help of former Everdown drummer, Chris Wible. After relocating back to Nashville in 2020, he continued developing Spoken in Tongues as a solo project, releasing the 2021 full-length The Light at the End of the Tunnel Is a Black Hole. That same period also produced Ghosts, a covers EP featuring songs originally recorded by ’80s-era bands The Jam, The Vapors, Big Country, The Call, and Hüsker Dü, as well as the single “Tow Truck,” which featured two reimagined Blenderhead tracks.
Power soon expanded Spoken in Tongues into a full band, recruiting Josh Hernandez (Stairwell) on guitar, Josh Rosa (Critter Brain) on bass, and Clark Osborne on drums. The new lineup entered the studio and emerged with the full-length The Unreal and the Hyperreal Happening at Once in 2022, followed by the Awkward Future EP in 2024. The band began bringing the project to the stage, establishing a presence in Nashville with performances at venues including The ’58, East Room, and The Basement East.
In 2025, Spoken in Tongues returned to the studio to record what would become their most fully realized album to date, The Most Lethal Fighting Force in the World. The record was mixed by Jeremy SH Griffith (Gasoline Heart, Norma Jean) and mastered by Alan Douches (Bayside, The Promise Ring). Four singles and two accompanying music videos—“Lethal” and “Run”—preceded the album’s September 2026 release.
Power continues to write, record, and release music through Planet Fun Sound, his independent studio and boutique label. With Spoken in Tongues, he continues to build on a decades-long connection to punk, emo, and melodic alternative rock while pushing the band into its next chapter.
